Rampage The Durian
‘Rampage On The Airwaves‘, a local music podcast, celebrates its first year anniversay with a whole slew of gigs galore. They also pay tribute to Wayne ‘Thunder’ Seah (The Suns), a passionate local music advocate who recently passed away.
From their press release:
“This July, bringing the action to the streets, ROTA presents a weekend of spectacular home-grown music live at the Esplanade Powerhouse Stage, showcasing the brightest rising young talents in our local rock music industry.
Kicking off the event on Friday 6th July will be Rika, a promising young band playing a unique hybrid of screamo and electronica. High-energy melodic emocore outfit A Vacant Affair takes the stage next before Malaysia’s post-hardcore export Love Me Butch closes off the night. Saturday 7th July brings the skanky ska tunes of The Sally’s, the funk-pop beats of The Pinholes and possibly the most exciting product of 2007, brit-rock outfit The Great Spy Experiment. Closing off the series of gigs will be the infectious reggae and ska hooks of Comic Strip, onstage alongside Syawla Evol’s catchy funk-rock melodies on Sunday 8th July.
The July weekend also pays homage to Mr. Wayne ‘Thunder’ Seah, who recently passed away. Since coming onboard the team for ‘The Aftermath of Baybeats Part 2’ and all subsequent shows, Wayne’s continuous and relentless support to the podcast has been unparalleled. Hidden behind the scenes most of the time but always on the forefront of the cause, Wayne’s tireless contribution to the production of every show as well as his likeable down-to-earth personality on shows such as ‘The History of Local Music’ series gained the podcast many fans.
Rampage The Durian is set to celebrate Singapore music as much as a whole year worth of podcasts, as a fitting tribute to Wayne’s passion and dedication to the local music scene.”

Brett!
Brett Anderson is coming to Singapore! According to yesterday’s Life! report, the beautiful one will be “performing his old hits and new songs on August 16″.
As that song, ‘Telegenic Babe by The Sugarflies goes:
“I think Jarvis is really cool, but Brett Anderson wins hands down!”
Get your tickets to the show at Suntec Hall 601, from Sistic; sales start on Monday (4 June).

It’s the Great Singapore Sale! And if you’re the sort who’d rather shop for music cds instead of clothes, there are bargains for you too. This is a quick rundown of some of the sales I’ve checked out.
Gramophone (all outlets)
- 20% off all cds, 15% off all dvds and vcds.
I’ve been to the outlets at Centrepoint, Taka, and Peninsula Plaza. Gramophone has always been my *favourite* cd store, because of the wide range of titles/genres and low prices. Though I find that level of customer service has been lacking at some outlets lately.
If you’re looking for a recently released mass market title (ie. nothing obscure), Gramophone would be the place to check out (that is, if the title isn’t sold out already). I scored Arctic Monkey’s latest release, Favourite Worst Nightmare for $15, after discount.
Borders
- 50% off selected music cds.
Yes, you read it correctly. Half-priced cds! Personally, Borders is my least favourite place to music shop because the cds are always in a mess. Rarely alphabetically arranged even. The only thing I like about Borders’ music section is the cd testing device, ‘cos you can scan and preview almost every cd available at the store. But I digress (perhaps I shall save this for a future review of cd stores in Singapore?).
I was at Borders on 1st June and there was a box of music cds at the entrance of Wheelock, all going for 50% off stickered price. Most were pre-2005 releases. My heart sank when I spotted quite a number which I had already purchased back when they were first released. Among them – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Tears, Starsailor, etc. I bought The Coral’s last cd, The Invisible Invasion – a cd I was supposed to pick up back in 2005, but kept forgetting.
will update with more music sales info if i come across any more
EDIT 16 JUNE 07:
CD store at Shaw Tower level 1
- $6.50 per cd, 50% of stickered price for most cds
I can never remember the name of this store. Possibly it’s Music Valley. But if you’re looking for exotic world music, this is the place to check out! Of note is the impressive French section. Seriously, you would never get prices this good, even in Europe. Believe me.
You know that Invisible Invasion cd I bought at Borders? And I was so happy it was on 50% discount? Well, here it was at Shaw Tower for $6.50.
